We feel strongly that all our yoga sessions should be as inclusive, friendly and safe as possible, for everyone who attends.
You may be aware of news around the exploitation and abuse of yoga attendees at classes and retreats around the world, especially of women. We stand with these survivors and wish to reclaim yoga as a tool for healing, peace and centring for everyone. For more information on this, please go to the campaign page, Yoni Shakti The Movement.
You may have noticed a change in the language to describe certain classes. We have removed mention of As(h)tanga Vinyasa in solidarity with those who were abused by Pattabhi Jois. These are now called Dynamic Flow. We also look to improve the naming of certain elements in use by Jois and recognised as his. We will no longer use the terms ‘Sri’ or ‘Guru/Guruji’ for anyone, so as to step away from the ‘cultish’ aspects of yoga.
We have taken this decision not to ‘brush over’ what these people have done, but so we can create a safe space for all.
Inclusion for all in yoga
You may also be aware of current discussions around race and Black Lives Matter. We wish to welcome ANYONE who comes to our sessions seeking to practise together. We will adjust our teaching, our language, our behaviour as needed to make our space as inclusive as possible for the people in it.
It should go without saying but we say it anyway: any racist, abusive or divisive language or behaviour in our yoga space will not be tolerated. Please call it out if we fail to.
The current health situation has meant the suspension of hands-on yoga adjustments, and we had taken the decision to minimise these anyway before the pandemic. Everyone practising yoga reserves the right to create a safe space on their mat.
We offer a mechanism for those who do not want to be approached, adjusted or addressed in each session with a counter placed on the mat. Alternatively, please talk to us. No reason is sought or needs to be given.
If you wish to comment on any of the above, please email directly. We are happy to improve this policy in any way we can.
